About Us

 Worshiping Community of Christ

Who we are

Oromo Speaking Evangelical Church

Oromo Church-Los Angeles is established on March 3, 2003 out of a house fellowship of a  Diaspora  Christian Oromos living in Los Angeles Metropolitan area. At the beginning the fellowship used to meet at Dr.Gudeta Inika’s home and later  moved in to the Mount Calvary Lutheran Church, with a good will of Rev. R. J. Perling and the Lutheran Missouri Synod, where it currently conducts its regular Sunday Worship Programs in Afaan Oromo.

The  Oromo Church - Los Angeles is also a member of the United Oromo Evangelical Churches, the association of Diaspora Oromo speaking Congregations. It was established to preach and teach the Gospel of Jesus Christ to all people of all ages, as well as with specific target of   reach out to the Oromo immigrants in the Metropolitan Los Angeles. It is estimated that there are over ten thousand Oromos in Southern California. Beyond reaching the Southern California Oromos, Oromo Church - Los Angeles fosters uniting existing and future Oromo congregations around the world and to provide assistance to Oromo Christians in their effort to organize Christian fellowships. Today, there are many Oromo communities throughout Africa, Europe, North America, Australia and New Zealand. These churches and fellowships share a common faith and pursue a common mission. Our church utilizes Afaan Oromo as the primary language of worship. English is used in other official documents and communication.

The Oromo people presently constitute about 45% of the present 70.5 million people living within the borders of Ethiopia. The Oromos are the original inhabitants of modern day Ethiopia. Today  their county is known as Oromia, the largest Federal sate in Ethiopia. Within Africa, Oromo people are also found in neighboring nations in the Horn of Africa, especially in Kenya, Somalia; Sudan and Djibouti. Of the 50 nations in Africa, the Oromos represent the second largest population after Fulani of West Africa.  Today the Oromo people adhere to three major religious traditions' Christianity, Islam and Traditional religion.

 Our Faith

Christ-Centered Evangelical

We believe in all the canonical books of the Old and New Testaments as the divinely inspired Word of God, and submit to these as the only infallible authority in all matters of faith and life.

We recognizes the three major ecumenical Creeds of the Early Church: The Apostles' Creed; The Nicene Creed, and The Athanasian Creed. Confess in thanksgiving and enjoy the mighty, saving history of salvation brought by our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

We believe in a divinely inspired order of ministry rightly to preach and to serve the people of God.

We believe in the prophetic emphasis of the whole Bible, maintain a wholistic ministry and mission, not separating body and soul.

We believe in the unity of all believers in union with Lord Jesus Christ and the confession of the the truth of His Word.

We honor a personal and communal Biblical discipline grounded in the confession of sins and absolution through God's grace  in Jesus Christ.

We are a missional Church, strongly believe in building bridges to people that don’t know Christ or see His relevance to their lives, whether it is here  or in any part of the world.

Our primary  missional aim is to bring the gospel to the Oromo people in a language and culture meaningful to them. Through wholistic ministries, networking and leadership development, we want to establish a sustainable, indigenous movement by  reaching  out contextually to the first generation immigrants of Oromo people from East Africa with the good news of Jesus Christ in culturally appropriate ways. Our nucleus is Los Angeles from where we are  reaching out to major cities in California such as Sand Diego, Sacramento, Bay Area, also Las Vegas in Nevada and beyond.

Ecumenical

The Worldwide Family of God

We are an ecumenical oriented church, committed to foster interdenominational and ecumenical relationships with other Christian churches in all of our ministries. For us  partnership in ministry is not an option, it is to what were called, hence we always yearn for it with all churches that actively promotes mission, Christianity as a lived faith, the inculcation of family values which aids the intergenerational transmutation of the gospel
